John T. Lang is a Professor of Sociology at 91ÁÔÆæ in Los Angeles, where he studies the intersection of food, culture, and social practice, alongside a growing research program on the sociology of sport. He served on the board of the Association for the Study of Food and Society from 2015 to 2024 and was subsequently appointed as a Fellow in recognition of his contributions to the field.

His research examines the social and cultural dimensions of food systems, from the scientific and political debates surrounding genetically modified foods to the collaborative networks that shape contemporary restaurant culture. His work has appeared in leading journals including Gastronomica, Food, Culture & Society, Food Policy, AgBioForum, and Risk Analysis, among others. His book What's So Controversial about Genetically Modified Food? has been published in English, Italian, and Korean. He is currently at work on a new book, The Future of Restaurants.

More recently, Lang has extended his cultural-sociological approach to American professional soccer, examining fan discourse and cultural legitimacy in the sport. This work extends into the classroom, where he teaches a First Year Seminar, "Understanding Society through Soccer," and "Sociology of Sport."

Lang lives in the San Gabriel Valley just outside of Los Angeles, California, USA, where the region's diverse culinary landscape, and its rich soccer culture, continue to inform both his food scholarship and his sport-related research.
